What is EMDR Therapy?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a structured, trauma-informed therapy that helps people process painful or overwhelming experiences in a safe and contained way.
While talking is part of the process, EMDR also uses bilateral stimulation—such as eye movements or tapping—to support the brain’s natural ability to heal and integrate distressing memories.
You don’t need to describe every detail of what happened; the focus is on how the memory is stored in your body and mind, and helping it shift.

EMDR can help with many experiences, including:
- PTSD and complex trauma
- Panic attacks and phobias
- Childhood neglect or abuse
- Grief and loss
- Medical trauma or birth trauma
- Anxiety, depression, and emotional dysregulation
- Feeling “frozen” or stuck in past experiences
- Recent distressing events
- Accidents or work related incidents
Why EMDR?
Many people come to EMDR therapy after months or even years of feeling stuck in patterns that don’t seem to shift—no matter how much insight they have.
Sometimes, trauma doesn’t show up as a dramatic memory—it shows up as constant overthinking, emotional shutdowns, relationship struggles, or feeling overwhelmed by everyday situations.
Our clients often describe a sense of relief, clarity, and calm after EMDR sessions—like something heavy has been lifted, or a loop has finally been broken.

EMDR NYC FAQ
Are Middle Way therapists certified in EMDR?
Yes! EMDR is a highly specialized technique. To be safe and effective, it should only be practiced by a therapist who is formally trained and experienced in trauma work. At Middle Way Psychotherapy, our EMDR therapists are not only certified—they’re deeply attuned to how trauma impacts the nervous system, identity, and relationships.
We take time to assess whether EMDR is the right fit, prepare you with grounding tools, and create a space where you feel truly supported—not rushed or overwhelmed.
Can EMDR be combined with other therapies?
Yes. EMDR can be integrated into a broader therapy plan, or used as a focused treatment for specific issues. We often combine it with talk therapy, body-based approaches, and other supportive tools.
Is EMDR only for trauma?
Not at all. While EMDR was originally developed for PTSD, EMDR can be helpful for anxiety, low self-esteem, phobias, grief, addiction, performance blocks, medical trauma, and other experiences that feel “stuck” in the body or mind.
Can I come to Middle Way Psychotherapy for EMDR if I already have a regular therapist?
Yes. We welcome clients who are seeking adjunctive EMDR while continuing to work with their primary therapist.
EMDR can be a powerful complement to ongoing talk therapy, especially when a client feels stuck or is ready to process specific traumatic experiences.
We work collaboratively—with your consent—to coordinate care and ensure that EMDR fits into the broader context of your healing. Our goal is to support the work you’re already doing, not to replace it.
Once the EMDR work is complete, clients typically return fully to their primary therapist with new insights, emotional relief, and greater capacity for growth.
